BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Dr. William Lundergan, is a professor and chair of the Department of Periodontics
at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. He earned
his certificate in periodontics from the University of Connecticut in 1983 and
received a Master's of Education from the University of the Pacific in 1994.
COURSE OUTLINE
The current understanding of the
pathogenesis of inflammatory periodontal disease will be reviewed along with the
newest classification system for periodontal diseases and conditions. The
identification of risk factors, microbial analysis and periodontal pharmacotherapeutics
will be discussed. Possible associations between periodontal disease and systemic
conditions (cardiovascular disease, pre-term low birth weight infants, diabetes and
respiratory diseases) will be presented. The focus will be to relate these changes
to the current general practice of dentistry.
